Michael Stops holds university degrees in economics and management sciences (Diplom-Volkswirt and Diplom-Verwaltungswirt, FH). First he studied the theoretical basis of the special tasks of the Federal Employment Agency at the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Mannheim. Then he worked as a placement officer at the Employment Office in Chemnitz, in the Human Resources, Administration and Financial Management department, and in the Research Management department of IAB. Additionally he graduated in economics and statistics at the distance-learning University of Hagen. From 2009 until 2013 he acted as an advisor to the Deputy Director of IAB. From 2012 to 2015 he did his doctorate (Dr. rer. pol., equivalent to a Ph.D.) and he has been a member of the Research Group "Occupational Labour Markets" since 2013. During this time he was also a visiting researcher at the University of Sussex (August to September 2012) and at the London School of Economics (October to December 2013).
