Education and Employment over the Life Course
Department
Research Department E1
Research task
In connection with the close link between education and labour market opportunities in Germany, our department analyses the relationship between education and employment from a life-course perspective. Part of our research focuses on general and vocational education, initial and further training, and certified qualifications and non-certified educational activities, while another strand deals with the analysis of employment, unemployment and economic inactivity.
Our main research questions are: What do early transitions between general education, vocational education and employment entry look like, and how have they changed? How do differing transition patterns shape the early years in one's career? Once initial education has been completed, how important are further education and the attainment of additional skills? In what way are educational processes, employment over the life course, and occupational mobility related? Which roles do gender and social origin play within such relationships?
We analyse these questions using process-produced data collected by the Federal Employment Agency, official statistics from the Federal Statistical Office and survey data we have compiled ourselves. The project "Qualifications, Competencies and Working Life" is currently collecting large-scale data on the life courses, literacy and numeracy of the adult population in Germany. With this project, the Research Department is leading the way in empirical research on basic adult skills and their interrelationship with educational and occupational pathways.
