Die Bedeutung von Tarifverträgen für den Gender Wage Gap

Availability

Abstract

"The article uses LIAB data for the years 2000 to 2010 to analyze the gender pay gap in Germany among full time workers, distinguishing the part of the economy not covered by collective wage agreements and the part covered by industry collective agreements. The results show that the gap was roughly of the same size at the beginning of the time period, but drifted apart afterwards. Meanwhile the gap is much larger in the part of the economy not covered by collective wage agreements. A Juhn-Murphy-Pierce decomposition between both regimes reveals that much of the difference in gender-wage gaps is due to unobservable factors. On the one hand, unobserved productivity differences between men and women working under collective contracts might be smaller. On the other hand wage discrimination might be less severe under collectively negotiated contracts. An additional analysis by economic sectors shows that the gender wage gap is lower under collective bargaining coverage in most industries. The net gender pay gap is mostly higher in manufacturing than in service sectors, with the exception of financial intermediation." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku) ((en))
