Abstract

"Results of negotiations depend on whether Group interests are represented in negotiations. This suggests that a stronger participation of women in collective bargaining committees could contribute to reduce the gender pay gap. Using a factorial survey this article examines how likely it is under different circumstances that employees would run for a wage negotiation committee, and what influence they expect to obtain in the case of an election. Women significantly less often than men indicate that that they would run for a position in the bargaining committee. Likewise, they expect on average significantly less often to have an impact on negotiation results. This gender difference can be explained by personal and job-related characteristics of respondents, which are, however, likely to partly result from gender specific behavior. Overall, the results suggest that in particular regulations that committee meetings have to occur during working hours could be suitable to increase the willingness to participate in wage negotiation committees."
