Although both the level of education and qualification and the participation of women in the labour market have increased in Germany in recent decades, there is still gender segregation in the labour market. At the same time, it is repeatedly argued that (physically) burdensome activities could be eliminated as digitization progresses. We question and test this hypothesis and ask whether differences between typical women's and men's occupations can be identified.
In order to map the degree of digitisation, we use the substitution potential of occupations calculated on the basis of the BERUFENET expert database of the Federal Employment Agency (Dengler/Matthes 2015). These are linked to the occupation-specific exposure index, calculated on the basis of Kroll (2011) on the basis of the BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey, and to an index of horizontal gender segregation calculated on the basis of administrative data from the Federal Employment Agency (Tophoven et al. 2015).
