Introduction to the new household panel study PASS (1st User Workshop)

Thursday, December 4th, 2008, 13:30-16:30

The workshop will be held in IAB, Weddigenstr. 20-22, Room We 126.

The Panel Study “Labour Market and Social Security” (PASS), which is conducted by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) is a new database for doing research on the labour market, the welfare state, and poverty in Germany. In this study, almost 19,000 individuals in more than 12,500 households are asked in detail about their experiences and opinions regarding such topics as employment/unemployment, health, poverty or benefit recipiency. With respect to the latter the survey puts a particular focus on studying the effects of the new Social Code II’s (SGB II) two basic types of benefits, which are benefits for covering basic living expenses and benefits for supporting re-integration in the labour market. In addition to that, the questionnaire contains subjective indicators (for example on life satisfaction, fears, or work orientations).

The goal of this workshop is to give an overview of the most important features of the study and the dataset and thus to facilitate potential users’ first steps in working with the new dataset. The user workshop will be organised as follows:

  1. Introduction: Goals of the study
  2. The design of PASS
  3. Data structure and most important variables
  4. How to use the weights
  5. Examples for applications
  6. The future of PASS: Information and discussion.
