It gives the proportion of the working population relative to the total working-age population (aged 15 to 64), thus showing to what degree working-age people are in active employment in the respective country.

    Formal Search and Referrals from a Firm’s Perspective

    This study explores the relationship between frms’ characteristics and their recruitment strategies. They propose a model based on a search and matching framework with two search channels: a formal channel which is costly for frms and a costless informal channel, i.e. referrals. There is a continuum of heterogeneous vacancies in our model where every firm with an open vacancy chooses an optimal search effort in order to attract job candidates. This search effort depends on the productivity of the firm and, contrary to the previous literature, workers send simultaneous applications to open vacancies. We assess the model predictions by using the IAB Job Vacancy Survey, a representative Survey among human resource managers in Germany reporting information about their most recent recruitment case.

    Walking between the worlds – labour market economist and former Secretary of State Pedro S. Martins

    Pedro S. MartinsPedro S. Martins is an expert spanning boundaries between science and politics: Martins, who is now doing research at Queen Mary University of London, was Secretary of State in the Ministry for Economics and Employment of his home country Portugal from 2011 until 2013.  At a time when unemployment, especially among the youth, achieved a record high across Southern Europe as a result of the economic and financial crisis. As a politician, he got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to combat job crisis by implementing measures that he himself had always advocated as a researcher.  

    In an interview to the IAB-Forum magazine, he airs his assessments and experience.


    Quantifying the effect of labor market size on learning externalities

    We show for Germany that labor productivity as reflected in wage is, ceteris paribus, higher for workers who previously acquired work experience in rather urban labor markets with a large local workforce than in rather rural labor markets which are small in terms of regional employment. Our empirical analysis provides new evidence on the magnitude of these dynamic agglomeration gains by estimating the elasticity of wages with regard to the (cumulated) size of the local labor markets in which workers acquired experience.
