The magazine of the Institute for Employment Research of the Federal Employment Agency
The magazine presents articles on the wide variety of research at the IAB. All editions focus on a specific topic. Additional short articles on various other research topics, on events at the IAB and its people, round off each edition. The IAB-Forum is published twice a year, and only in German.
Issue 2/2011
The current issue of the IAB-Forum is devoted to regional disparities in the German labour market. This does not only refer to the continuingly large gradient between the Western part of the country and the East: the differences within each of the two regions are also considerable – and not only in respect to unemployment. Similarly the future availability of labour is developing in an extremely different way from region to region. As regards employment dynamics, quality of employment, rates of part-time work and the distribution of further in-house training, the regions likewise diverge extensively.
The articles dealing with this main topic closely examine the manifold reasons for these disparities. In addition they show that IAB's regional expertise is of great benefit to local labour market actors who require a high level of information and advice. An example of this is the categorization developed by IAB of the institutes providing support in accordance with SGB II (Book II of the Social Code). This makes it possible to compare the integration performances of the 422 Job Centres throughout Germany. The interview with two members of staff from the Regional Research Network, reproduced in this issue, illustrates the concrete way in which IAB research is directly useful to practical labour market policy.
Outside the main focal point of this issue, you will also find a discussion article on the much debated topic of "lack of skilled labour". According to the authors, there is hardly likely to be a lack of qualified staff caused only by demographic reasons in the future.
