Best Paper Award 2009* goes to René Böheim and Ulrike Famira-Mühlberger

This year as well, the editors of the Journal for Labour Market Research (Zeitschrift für ArbeitsmarktForschung, ZAF) have conferred a Best Paper Award for the best article of the previous year. The prize, which includes prize money of 1,000 euros, goes to René Böheim and Ulrike Famira-Mühlberger of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research. Their article is entitled "Dependent self-employment: workers between employment and self-employment in the UK". It was published in Issue 2-2009.

According to the editors, the article is a professional and highly relevant analysis of the British labour force survey. The authors show that dependent self-employed persons constitute an independent category in the labour market alongside employees and "normal" self-employed persons; moreover it shows that this category of persons have been forced to adopt this labour market status rather than having been drawn to it by choice ("necessity entrepreneurship" as opposed to "opportunity entrepreneurship").

* Articles co-authored by members of the ZAF editorial board are not included in the assessment.
