Institutions and Macroeconomic Labour Market Analysis
Department
Research Department A1
Research task
The Research Department "Institutions and Macroeconomic Labour Market Analysis" examines the determinants of important macroeconomic labour market outcomes, especially those of employment, vacancies and unemployment. For the development of these factors, wage formation processes as well as job flows (creation of and reduction in jobs) and worker flows (recruitment and dismissals of workers) play a central role. These developments are strongly marked by the institutions of the labour market, such as wage determination processes, tax and levy systems, as well as employment protection, and earnings-replacement benefits.
Among the issues examined by the Research Department are: What effects do minimum wages or changes in the tax and transfer system have on balanced employment? What effect do institutional changes (such as the Hartz reforms) or economic shocks have on the process of filling jobs? In what way do wages and worker flows develop in the course of the economic cycle and in the long-term perspective?
The methodical spectrum ranges from the use of linked micro-macro simulation models via dynamic-stochastic equilibrium models to the econometric analysis of IAB micro data. In future, the surveying of the macroeconomic supply of jobs will also be dealt with by this department. Here data will be collected on the number and structure of vacant jobs as well as on job-filling processes.
