Consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Working Group

Research task

The IAB working group “Consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic” is focusing on the issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic and its far-reaching consequences for individuals, the economic development and the labour market. Being divided into two sub-topics “Economic Consequences of the COVID-19 Pandemic” and “COVID-19 Pandemic: Consequences for Individuals”, the working group deals both with the macroeconomic development of the labour market as well as the effects of the pandemic on the operational structures, and with the consequences for the (working) life of individuals. By this token, the IAB research also covers the aspects of individual health, gender differences in allocation of professional and family time, as well as the effects on social cohesion and social inequality. The focus is, on the one hand, on the specific impact of the crisis on different groups of individuals, industry sectors and regions, and on the other hand, on the effects of the political measures. Additionally, the long-term consequences of COVID-19 as well as the interactions with important trends on the labour market need to be explored, since such processes – for instance, digital transformation – may gain momentum due to the pandemic.

The working group pools IAB’s research and expertise on the consequences of the pandemic and serves the purpose of supporting exchange between different departments and disciplines on the on-going and planned data work and research projects. Another purpose of the working group is to ensure the exchange with politics, the scientific community and practice in order to gain impulses for new research endeavours.

An overview of the IAB’s current research activities on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the labour market including the results of the surveys “Establishments in the COVID-19 Crisis” and “Life and Employment in Times of Corona” is available at
