Abstract

Companies' engagement in further education and training is investigated on the basis of the IAB Establishment Panel. Findings on the indicators of companies' participation and employees' participation rate within companies are presented. Regarding the general prevalence of further education and training, it is found that general activity has increased slightly but steadily in recent years. Differentiating by company size reveals that further education activity correlates positively with company size. Regarding the share of employees participating in further education, it is found for 2007 that some 22 per cent of employees were involved. Especially well-qualified employees profited from their employers' further education activities. Further education participation is higher in the East German federal states; the difference to the Western states amounts to nearly six percentage points. The observation of the further education ratio across classes of company size does not indicate any significant differences. Smaller companies indeed offer further education less frequently, but if they do, they do not lag behind large companies regarding the participation of employees, but actually outperform their participation rates.
