"Und dann haben sie mir alles gesperrt"

"The following contribution deals with young persons who are subject to sanctions and their perspectives. It is based on a research project of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB, Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung), within the framework of which the points of view and experience of skilled workers are first surveyed by the institutions providing basic income support for job-seekers. These guided interviews as well as the study by Ames indicate that young persons subject to sanctions are often at a disadvantage in respect to their material, family and qualification resources. What characterizes the biographies of young persons subject to sanctions, and how do they cope with these sanctions? These are the central issues discussed here. The term 'Bewältigung' (Engl.: coping with; mastering; overcoming) refers here less to the everyday way of dealing with the direct results of sanctions, such as those related to nutrition and a place to live, but rather to the basic orientation of action that has developed and been built up through the course of one's biography."
