Abstract

"Within Germany, Central Germany - that is the states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt und Thuringia - is especially strongly affected by democratic change. The drop in and the aging of the population bring with them a sharp decline in trainees along with a workforce that is getting older. The supply of labour will drop almost everywhere. At the same time the demand for labour will likely shift further in favour of middle and highly qualified employees on account of structural change in respect to sectors and qualifications.
The article describes the starting situation on the labour market in Central Germany and the results of demographic change for the labour supply and the labour demand. Here the emphasis is on the question of whether and to what extent, in the face of the partially still relatively high unemployment figures, a shortage of qualified workers could arise. How could this be measured? Which occupational fields would be affected? And can one deduce shortages in qualified labour by means of wages which are intended to function as a central balancing mechanism between supply and demand?" (Text excerpt, IAB-Doku)
