"In the last two decades, participation by older persons in the labour market has increased noticeably. With that, Germany is one of the OECD countries which exhibit the strongest growth in the employment of older persons within this period. This is a result of a combination of a number of factors. These include the fact that older persons are remaining in the world of work for a longer time, as well as the cohort effects in favour of a stronger presence of women in employment and a growing share of qualified and highly qualified persons in the population. Nevertheless, older persons partially represent a problem group in the labour market. In comparison to younger persons this can be seen from the low chances of new recruitment and the higher risks of lifelong unemployment. Further improvements in the employment situation of older persons are therefore in no way automatic: here it will be a question of increased investments in sustainable employability. Key in this area are education, training and prevention in the field of health." (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku)
