Professor Bernd Fitzenberger will be honoured with the German Economy Award

Professor Bernd Fitzenberger, PhD 

The IAB Director Bernd Fitzenberger will be honoured with the German Economy Award of the Joachim Herz Foundation. The labour market economist will receive an award worth EUR 150,000 for the best research publication.

The German Economy Award was established in 2016 and is awarded every two years by the Joachim Herz Foundation for outstanding interdisciplinary research in economic sciences. This year, the most notable German monetary award for economic sciences goes to four labour market economists. Professor Bernd Fitzenberger, Director of the Institute for Employment Research, will receive an award worth EUR 150,000 for the best research publication.

“In his research, Bernd Fitzenberger […] focuses particularly on the issues of wage inequality, the effects of labour market policy measures such as Hartz reforms, or the influence of trade unions on the labour market. He also actively contributes to the further development of the methodology of empirical economic research. In recent years, he has done a lot for the advancement of German labour economics to the level of international top research,“ the Joachim Herz Foundation acknowledges the achievements of this year’s award-winner.

Along with the prize for the best research publication, the Foundation also awards prizes totalling EUR 50,000 for outstanding research contributions of young researchers.

“Our award-winners ask important questions regarding society as a whole. They offer valuable suggestions as to how our working environment shall develop to make sure that our economy remains effective also in the future,“ as Dr. Henneke Lütgerath, Chairman of the Joachim Herz Foundation, puts it.

With the German Economy Award, the Foundation strives to promote interdisciplinary approaches and methods in economic sciences, additionally offer incentives to broaden the perspectives of economic sciences, and develop new solutions to both old and new problems.

The award ceremony will be held in Hamburg on 19 March 2020 under the patronage of Katharina Fegebank, Science Senator in Hamburg.
