Professional career

Mariella Falkenhain has worked at the IAB (research department Joblessness and Social Inclusion) since December 2017. She studied political science and Romance philology at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Université de Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle. Between 2011 and 2012, she was Research Associate at the Hertie School of Governance (chairs of sociology and political sociology). She received scholarships from the Heinrich Boell Foundation and the DFG-funded Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS). In 2017, she received her doctoral degree from the Hertie School of Governance. In her dissertation, she studied organizations in weak institutional environments. Between 2015 and 2018, she served as visiting lecturer at the University of Bamberg. Mariella Falkenhain’s research focuses on refugees and successful labor market integration, and labor migration from the Western Balkan states. Her research interests include poverty, integration and governance in the context of labor migration and forced migration, as well as qualitative methods. Mariella Falkenhain is an active member of the International Public Policy Association (IPPA) and the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR).
