Professor Bellmann's field of research is labour market economics, in particular questions of wage structures and employment dynamics, vocational education and training and further training, and the employment of older employees.

Professional career
Lutz Bellmann has been Head of the Research Department “Establishments and Employment” since 2000 and Professor of Economics, in particular Labour Economics, at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg since May 2009. He completed his degree (MA) in economics 1980, earned his doctorate in economics in 1985, and qualified as a professor in economics at the Leibniz University Hannover in 2004. After that, he worked as a lecturer at the universities of Bamberg, Basel, Hannover, Cologne, Passau, Speyer, Trier, Tübingen and Würzburg. He has been employed by the IAB since 1988 and took charge of the IAB Establishment Panel in 1997. Lutz Bellmann is research fellow of the Labor and Socio-Economic Research Center (LASER) of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and research fellow of the IZA – Institute of Labor Economics. He is a member of different scientific panels and Deputy Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Institute of Vocational Education and Training, and Co-Director of the Institute for Liberal Professionals (IFB Institut für freie Berufe) based in Nuremberg. He is a member of the advisory board of BayernFonds of the Free State of Bavaria which supports real economy companies in Bavaria (appointed by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy) and the advisory board of Adult Learning Centre Nürnberg. Lutz Bellmann participates in the teaching of bachelor's degree programmes and master's degree programmes in economics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.
